In November 2013 we agreed to work with the Office of Fair Trading and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to produce an assessment of competition in the energy retail market.
The assessment, which we published 27 March 2014, updates previous work we have undertaken including the Retail Market Review and the Energy Supply Probe.
Alongside the assessment we published a consultation on our proposed decision to make a market investigation reference to the CMA.
On 26 June we published our decision, below. We have referred the energy market to the CMA for full investigation
We believe an investigation by the CMA is an important opportunity to clear the air and to make sure competition in the energy market effectively bears down on costs and drives improvements in customer service and innovation. This will help rebuild consumer trust and confidence in the market.
It will also provide the certainty that is needed for investment in the energy sector and complement our recent reforms to make the market simpler, clearer and fairer for consumers.
