The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) supports the decarbonisation of heat in buildings. It provides upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers in homes and non-domestic buildings in England and Wales. Grants of £7,500 are available for air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) and £5,000 available for biomass boilers. Grants are offered at a flat rate and do not vary by capacity of the installation, which must not exceed 45 kWth. The scheme opened for applications on 23 May 2022. The digital portal for installers to make and manage their applications opened on 28 November 2022.
This guidance outlines Ofgem’s administration of the BUS. It is primarily for MCS installers wishing to take part in the BUS but other stakeholders such as property owners, associated industries and organisations, consumer groups and the public sector may also be interested in this document. This document was first published on 6 May 2022 as draft guidance for comment. We published an updated version on 21 July 2022 following feedback from industry.
The latest version of the guidance was published on 01 May 2024.
We have also published guidance for property owners. Information on the BUS is also available on the GOV.UK website.
