Green Gas Support Scheme guidance
This guidance is for biomethane producers wishing to apply to the scheme, tariff guarantee holders, and scheme participants. This is also relevant for associated industries and organisations, consumer groups and the public sector.
This guidance covers:
- eligibility and how to apply to the scheme
- how tariff rates are determined
- participant obligations once registered,
- and how to submit periodic data and receive payments.
- It also sets out the scheme’s audit regime and compliance processes, along with other aspects of Ofgem’s administration.

Version 2.2 of the Green Gas Support Scheme Guidance is the current guidance.
Upcoming amendments to the scheme
Draft Version 3.0 contains proposed changes to the scheme including:
- details of the extension to the scheme commissioning window, enabling a stage 3 application to be made until March 2030.
- changing when sustainability audits are required, moving from registration anniversary dates to scheme years.
These changes will take effect once the relevant regulatory amendments become law on 16 October 2026. We will update the guidance when the changes come into force.
