Installers and optional monitoring
What is optional monitoring?
An MMSP works like a service contract and is a useful way of checking how well the heating system is performing and whether or not it is performing to the level promised by your installer. Applicants who are successful registering an agreement for MMSP receive some financial support for installing the package and sticking to the agreement. We have worked with the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) to provide a model agreement, which can be found on the RECC website. Applicants must then submit the agreement to us as part of their MMSP registration application.
Optional monitoring is different to installing meters to receive Domestic RHI tariff payments, which some people are required to do.
It’s one of the metering options applicants can choose if their domestic plant needs metering for performance or metering for payment.
Who's it for?
It's only for those with heat pumps or with biomass boilers that are designed and installed to only burn wood pellets (not biomass pellet stoves or any other biomass boilers).
Applicants who applied on or after 22 May 2018 who have heat pump are required to be [key-term:2357:Metering for performance]. They can apply for MMSP as a way to fulfil the metering for performance criteria.
Applicants can register for MMSP regardless of whether their heating system needs to be metered for payments or metered for performance. It doesn't affect their application or payment criteria.
MMSP is useful for people interested in analysing their heating data to see how their system is performing. They may be able to log on to a website and view the data captured. It’ll help them check their system is working as efficiently as it should.
You’ll also be able to see the data so you can help identify problems, or let your customer know if their system is underperforming.
How much extra payment would the applicant get?
If the applicant applied for the MMSP at the same time as their Domestic RHI application, they will receive the maximum of seven years of MMSP payments. If they applied for the MMSP afterwards, they’d only get payments for the remainder of the seven years of their RHI lifetime or until the MMSP agreement ended or was terminated, or if we withdraw their registration.
If for some reason an applicant needs to move from deemed to metered payments then MMSP is one of the ways to meet this requirement.
