Whistleblowing for energy sector employees
What is a whistleblower
You may be an external whistleblower if you:
- do not work for Ofgem
- work in the electricity or gas industry
- want to disclose information about the activities of companies or individuals in the industry to raise a concern about wrongdoing, risk or malpractice that you are aware of through your work
Protections for whistleblowers
We welcome information from whistleblowers, and would encourage you to contact us if you wish to raise a concern.
The Employment Rights Act (ERA) 1996 as amended by the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA) came into force on 2 July 1999 and is commonly referred to as the whistleblowing legislation.
The PIDA creates a framework to allow individuals in the private and public sectors to make disclosures of information which is in the public interest, by giving them protection from victimisation or from being subject to a detriment by their employer.
We are designated by PIDA to receive disclosures about the gas and electricity industry and we take information provided by whistleblowers seriously.
We treat all disclosures made under this Whistleblowing guidance sensitively, and will protect the identity of the individual making an allegation wherever possible. However, in certain circumstances we may be required to reveal identity, where we are required to by law.
