Non Fossil Fuel Obligation (NFFO) / Scottish Renewable Obligation (SRO)
About the scheme
Before the introduction of the Renewables Obligation (RO), the Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation (NFFO), NI NFFO and Scottish Renewables Obligation (SRO) were the government's primary instruments of renewable energy policy.
The first phase of contracts under the schemes were launched in 1990 and the contracts from the final phases expired in 2019. Ofgem’s role within the schemes was mainly to ensure that parties continued to meet their obligations under their NFFO/SRO contracts. In addition, upon a request from a contracted generator we had a role to consider whether a contract should be terminated if it was deemed to be no longer economically viable.
