Feed-in Tariffs (FIT)
Scheme closure
The FIT scheme closed to new applications from 1 April 2019.
The closure of the scheme doesn’t affect installations which are already accredited. FIT support is payable for the installation’s eligibility period (typically 20 years) and tariffs are adjusted annually by the Retail Price Index (RPI).
Generator obligations under their ‘statement of FIT terms’ (the terms and conditions they agreed with your FIT licensee) will continue for the duration of the eligibility period. This includes the obligation to inform their FIT licensee about changes including the:
- installation of battery storage with your FIT installation
- replacing or moving of metering,
- replacing generating equipment, or adding capacity.
Current options for generators
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) launched on 1 January 2020 and requires electricity suppliers to pay small-scale generators for low-carbon electricity which they export back to the National Grid. All installations which are eligible for the FIT scheme are also eligible for the SEG, provided they are fitted with an export or smart meter capable of taking measurements at half-hourly intervals.
SEG Licensees choose the rate which they will pay SEG Generators, the contract length, and other terms, but the tariff rate must always be above zero.
You can learn more about the SEG on the Smart Export Guarantee page.
